If you are wondering what it is like to be a member of Weorod, who better to ask than our members? They always want more people to 'play' with! Most of them came in never having done this sort of thing before and were nervous at first about their lack of knowledge, but soon settled in. Here's what they have to say:
Looking back on nearly ten years as part of Weorod, two reflections come to mind. Firstly, Weorod is a remarkable place, where an interest in the Anglo‑Saxon period can be developed both theoretically and practically. Secondly, Weorod is a fantastic group of friends, and spending time together is always a pleasure.

Weorod is a place to meet like-minded people who are interested in the Saxon period and in using research to portray it accurately. It is a group where we can expand our knowledge and answer our questions about the past through research and discussion; where we can research and make artefacts and explore crafts that were around at the time. A group where we can dress in clothing accurate to the period and share our knowledge and findings with the public, giving insight to history and bringing it to life. It is a group where we have fun and enjoy doing these things together and supporting each other.

Weorod appeals to me because it allows me to delve into what is, to me, one of the most interesting periods in British History. (probably too many "me's"! ;o)) I also enjoy the social aspect of the fortnightly training sessions, interacting with other people with the same interests. Ultimately, the icing on the cake has to be when we attend shows and the enthusiastic response we receive from the public - especially the children.

Despite being a member of Weorod for nearly 10 years, my enthusiasm for being part of such a wonderful group of like-minded individuals has never waned. Driven by a collective passion for Early Anglo-Saxon History, everyone's diligence towards re-enacting this wonderful time period as accurately as possible is both an inspiration and a privilege to be a part of

I enjoy working within a small, friendly team who take so much pride in researching their costumes and displays from the published data - looking for patterns and differences between the local sites. I particularly like attempting to replicate finds from the local cemeteries - working in different mediums - most of which I have never tried before and I cannot imagine anywhere else where I would get these opportunities?!? The occasional invitations we get to visit active archaeological sites are really important to me too - it is so exciting to be there as history is un-covered - and then when we visit museums we can see similar items that are already conserved. I find this really inspiring. All round, Weorod is a pleasure to be a part of and there is always something new to learn or experience.

I love the fact that one is constantly learning - every week you learn something new. Learning and enhancing new/old skills, speculating on how, why or whether people of this period did or made certain things.

Fun, friendship, meeting and talking to different people at events, learning new skills, shopping, dressing up and cake!
