Weorod are a small, independent Historical Re-Enactment and Living History society based in Southern Hampshire. Founded in January 2008, we are formed around a nucleus of seasoned re-enactors with many years experience gained whilst working with organisers of both large multi-period events and small shows. We normally commit to around six weekend events throughout the season allowing us to maintain a healthy balance between group training sessions and shows. This enables us to always give our best.
As a society that is local to Hampshire we have developed a reputation for historical accuracy in addition to the quality and authenticity of our kit. We are predominantly interested in sharing our enthusiasm for the period by enlightening and educating the public, ensuring that we keep peoples' attention throughout the day - not just during combat displays. We see no point in giving up precious time to travel to an event just to sit around all day and talk amongst ourselves. We provide a high quality package for event organisers, be they local museums, historical trusts or village fêtes, as well as inspiring the public and not least, our membership.
Weorod portrays the peoples of what some still refer to as the 'Dark Ages'. We take pride in the fact that we have the capability to represent a specific phase of the early medieval period, ensuring that only the correct costume and other equipment is displayed before the public. Our chosen time period falls within the sixth and seventh centuries (520-680 or thereabouts). All members of Weorod have a complete set of basic kit, finely tuned to this era. We often represent the tribe of the Meonware, who were occupying southern Hampshire during this period, but some of our members will show replica goods from outside of this Jutish province, in order to illustrate the spectacular craftsmanship of the time. To date we have few local finds to equal those from the princely burials at Taplow or Sutton Hoo, but we remain positive for the future that many more will be found within our tribal lands. Our ability to display our chosen period has been amply demonstrated by the success of the shows that we have participated in at National Trust properties, such at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, where we have represented members of a Germanic war-band contemporary with the famous burials excavated on the site.
We have an inordinate amount of enthusiasm for our chosen period and believe that this is infectious to those around us - be they prospective recruits, members of the public visiting our encampment at a show or the Event Organiser with whom we are working. We believe that we can offer any individual who has a genuine passion for our period a healthy environment in which to explore their interest as well as the chance to be part of a dedicated and enthusiastic society.
If Weorod sounds like the kind of organisation that you would be interested in joining or booking then please read on. Our web-site is not intended as a resource for study, or indeed as a study of our period. It is merely a window on to our society and we hope it will encourage all interested parties to contact us to find out more about who we are, what we do and what we can offer 'you'.
We hope that you enjoy browsing our pages. Should you wish to make comment or to ask any questions then please use any of the links on the relevant pages and we will reply as soon as possible.
